Building Maintenance Lead Worker (Custodial) will oversee the visitor centers and other high use facilities including the cleaning and maintenance required for the safe and efficient operation of the facilities and associated areas. Work will entail all aspects of custodial work, minor HVAC maintenance, and other visitor center maintenance as needed within Custer State Park. Some common tasks for this roll will be cleaning all areas within the facilities, faucet and fixture repair/replacement, seasonal facility start up and winterization, and occasional lift station monitoring. Additionally, throughout the season the position may be pulled to support other staff in the park with more specific maintenance projects such as carpentry (new construction and remodeling), plumbing, basic electrical, painting, mechanical, and occasional heavy equipment operation. Building Maintenance Lead Workers will also oversee and direct seasonal or volunteer janitorial support staff assigned to them as well as assist any Building Maintenance Specialists. Tasks require prolonged standing, bending, and working in cramped areas, on roofs, ladders and scaffolding. Incumbents are subject to muscle strain, exposure to inclement weather, possible injuries from hand and power tools or may be exposed to dangers associated with work involving biological contacts, electricity, gas fumes, confined spaces, roadway traffic, or wild animal interactions. Incumbents will be required to work some weekends and holidays. Help with special events such as the buffalo roundup, arts festival, and Sturgis motorcycle rally.

Licenses and Certifications:
Valid driver's license

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

  • attention to detail;
  • custodial/janitorial experience;
  • general knowledge of general building maintenance;
  • good communication skills;
  • seasonal staff supervision experience.


Knowledge of and ability to:

  • the methods and practices of janitorial work (five visitor/educational facilities);
  • the methods and practices of facility maintenance;
  • tools and equipment associated with the tasks of the position;
  • communicate information clearly and concisely;
  • establish timetables for projects;
  • follow instructions;
  • supervise seasonal or volunteer staff;
  • deal tactfully with both staff and public;
  • complete delegated tasks;
  • read and understand blueprints and drawings;
  • lift 50 pounds or more ;
  • work at heights greater than 10' from ladders; scaffolding; lifts;
  • work in confined areas such as manholes, crawlspaces, or attics.


This position is eligible for Veterans' Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
