Job Description:
This position will be a member of the Region Design team within the Rapid City Region.

The position requires good problem solving skills to design a safe and efficient transportation system. This position is involved in highway design and project delivery of highway construction plans to improve safety, condition, and capacity of the state highway system. Highway improvements for construction plans include grading, roadway surfacing, pipe culverts, guardrail, erosion control, and other miscellaneous highway assets.

This position will be working in an office environment, typically 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday. Occasional outdoor project meetings are needed. Limited overnight travel for meetings will occur.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Duties may include, but are not limited design development to meet the requirements of the project scope and prepare design plans based on department standards, manuals, and engineering knowledge. A design review by peers will be performed on the project plans. Recommendations, technical assistance, and corrective actions will be necessary to support construction staff and assist with contractor questions.

Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge:
  • highway design methods, processes, and sequences needed to deliver project plans (preferred but not required);
  • standard terminology, techniques, and practices of drafting and design of highway construction plans;
  • engineering and scientific principles, practices, and methods as applicable to highway design.

Skills:
  • operate various software related to highway design (Microsoft based, OpenRoads Designer, Civil 3D, ArcGIS, etc.);
  • read and interpret highway construction plans, right of way plats, design guides and regulatory documents;
  • provide technical information and interpretation to permitting agencies, consultants, contractors and SDDOT staff.

Position Requirements:
Engineer 1: Only applicants with a bachelor's of science degree in civil engineering or related field will be considered. Passed the Fundamentals of Engineering exam.

Engineer 2: A bachelor's of science degree in civil engineering or related field plus 2-3 years of experience equivalent to a E2 in the Engineering Career Band. Experience in highway construction or design. Possess or be eligible to obtain Professional Engineer license.

Compensation:
The total compensation of Hourly Wage + State/Federal Benefits for a typical year for entry level Region Design Engineer is approximately $84,474.00 annually.
