This is the Operations Maintenance Engineer position, supervising vocational and professional staff to provide technical guidance and maintenance engineering support to field maintenance personnel across the state.

This position coordinates and directs activities for and offers guidance and coaching to maintenance support staff. Assists in interviewing and hiring, conducts performance reviews, and provides input on personnel actions. Hires, trains, and directs the activities of summer interns to carry out guardrail inspections statewide.

Serves as an engineering technical reference for the maintenance support team, field maintenance personnel, central office staff, and DOT Region and Area offices. Manages questions from staff and suggestions for improvements and innovations; facilitates decision-making; and proposes solutions to maintenance issues throughout the state. Educates maintenance support, field maintenance, and other DOT staff on new developments and communicates critical information to the department on advancements in maintenance methods and techniques.

This position manages maintenance contracts for QC/QA bridge inspections, underwater bridge inspections, pollinator plot inspections, and SD-Nebraska and SD-Iowa border bridge maintenance. Work includes hiring consultants from retainer lists, putting out Requests for Proposals; coordinating with DOT Legal staff to create and renew contracts; reviewing consultant reports; monitoring progress and performance of contracted activities; and planning budgetary requirements for contracts annually.

Develops direction, goals, and objectives for the phases of Maintenance and Equipment Management System implementation addressing maintenance activities, time entry, planning, scheduling, budgeting, and level of service.

Chair of the Maintenance, Operations, and Safety Training group to identify maintenance training needs and to ensure training is made available to maintenance staff throughout the department. Chair of the DOT Maintenance Standards Panel working to identify gaps or improvement areas, and to initiate and develop policies and procedures for maintenance work functions.

This position represents the South Dakota DOT on the AASHTO Committee on Maintenance and the WASHTO Subcommittee on Maintenance. Also represents the department on the State's Weed and Pest Commission. These duties require networking with members of other agencies, states, and federal entities. This position also serves as the DOT's primary point of contact for placing amber alerts on 511 and the interstate dynamic message signs.

The total compensation of Hourly Wage + State/Federal Benefits for a typical year for entry level Operations Maintenance Engineer is approximately $109,391.00 annually.

Licenses and Certifications:
A Professional Engineer license in South Dakota is preferred.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or related engineering degree plus 6 months bridge inspection experience, 3-6 years engineering experience equivalent to a Level 3 on the professional track in the Engineer Career Family, and/or 1-3 years team lead experience equivalent to Management Level 1.

  • bridges, structures, and guardrail plus familiarity with the DOT Office of Bridge Design and Region Bridge staff;

  • DOT Strategic Plan and current focus areas and key actions pertinent to maintenance engineering support.
