The Equipment Shop Foreman manages a Department of Transportation repair shop and parts room for the Region. Duties may include, but are not limited to, providing recommendations for Department of Transportation unit budget development; managing assigned personnel; managing the repair, replacement, disposal, acquisition, maintenance and coordination of vehicles and equipment; managing inventories and general building maintenance/repair; ensuring compliance with all departmental, state, and federal policies pertaining to the functions of the shop; ensure that procurement of parts and inventory are timely, accurate, accountable, and in compliance with the related polices and contracts.

From approximately April 15 to October 15, the anticipated work schedule for this position is 10-hour days, 4 days per week from Monday through Thursday each week. The shop is to maintain core staff on Fridays during the April-October timeframe. This requires rotational scheduling which results in some Friday coverage. From approximately October 15 - April 15, the anticipated work schedule for this position is eight-hour days, Monday through Friday. Night and shift work will be required, including working weekend hours and holidays during emergencies and inclement weather.

Work assignments are frequently performed indoor with occasional outside work.

The total compensation of Hourly Wage + State/Federal Benefits for a typical year for entry level Equipment Shop Foreman is approximately $79,806.00 annually.

Incumbents must have a valid driver license and must have or obtain a valid commercial driver license (CDL) within 120 days of hire date to retain employment. The incumbent must have a Class A CDL with the tanker endorsement and no restrictions in order to operate any Class A vehicle that is a truck-tractor/semi-trailer, with manual transmission. The CDL must include an N endorsement (tank vehicle) for specific positions and must have no transmission restrictions. Employee will be subject to pre-employment, random, reasonable-suspicion, post-accident, follow up, and return-to-duty drug and alcohol testing.

Pursuant to SDCL 32-12A, applicants will be required to authorize the Department of Transportation to obtain a complete driving record. Applicants living outside of South Dakota may be asked to provide a motor vehicle record from their state of residence.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
Associate's degree in automotive technology, auto mechanics or diesel mechanics, or completion of a formal post-secondary technical training program in automobile or heavy equipment-related repair (of at least 30 credit hours and one school year in duration), experience in automotive or heavy equipment repair, and experience managing staff.

Knowledge of:
  • personnel management and the practices of supervision (desirable but not required);
  • basic financial management procedures;
  • principles, methods, tools and equipment of the diesel and automotive technology trade;
  • principles of electronic diesel engine computer technology, diagnostics, and repair;
  • principles of internal combustion engines, various drive trains, gear boxes, hydraulic systems, and electrical systems;
  • electrical monitors and meters to diagnose computer, mechanical and electrical systems on equipment/vehicles (e.g., laptop diagnostic software test, scan tools, Digital Voltage Ohm Meter, etc.);
  • minor and major repair on equipment and vehicles (e.g., engine, transmission, and differential rebuilding, mechanical system components, brakes, belts, cooling system, hydraulic systems, air conditioning, suspension, electrical, computer, etc.);
  • occupational hazards and safety precautions of the mechanics' trade.

Skills to:
  • perform basic mathematical computations to make precise measurements and develop repair estimates;
  • operate various computer hardware/software, including but not limited to Microsoft office suite;
  • time management and organizational skills needed to schedule, prioritize, assign, research, order parts, track, and document several ongoing equipment repairs that are to be completed by multiple staff members.
