Job Description

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. Responsible for facilitating active learning experiences within the classroom, including:

a. Maintain a classroom environment conducive to learning.

b. Design and implement lesson plans for each class or individual student. Submit to Principal on a weekly basis.

c. Thorough knowledge of the background of each assigned student and continual review of treatment progress.

d. Ensure up-to-date IEPs are completed for each assigned student. Participate in the IEP process for each assigned student.

e. Coordinate and supervise classroom paraprofessionals.

f. Responsible for overall classroom management, including supervision of classroom Youth Development Specialists (YDS).

g. Collaborate with other Teachers regarding individual student or classroom concerns.

h. Assist with crisis interventions, escorts, and any other school area needs.

i. Actively involved in personal staff development and implementation of new teaching techniques designed for alternative school settings.

2. Responsible for effective and efficient communication.

a. Demonstrate effective communication and social skills with students, staff, therapists, and administration throughout the school day.

b. Demonstrate effective communication and social skills with outside personnel, including parents of students, prior or referring educational institutions and Departments, Plankinton School District personnel, and others with an interest in the student’s educational needs.

c. Review student’s background and communicate with therapists on a regular basis to update school progress, school reviews, or report significant incidents at school.

d. Communicate with School Principal and/or Therapists regarding classroom YDS issues.

e. Attend student staffing for assigned students.

f. Collaborate with Clinical staff to develop and implement behavioral programs for assigned students.

3. Responsible for accurate and timely educational records.

FLSA Status: Exempt Reports to: School Principal

Days/Hrs of Work: Monday – Friday, school hours; may vary dependent upon needs of facility Created: Last Updated: 1/1/2007 4/21/2011

a. Complete with accuracy and timeliness any required forms and reports such as staffing, daily school reports, student grades, grade books, reviews, behavioral objective charts, educational plans, incident reports, point sheets, and other forms pertaining to school.

b. Submit such reports to Educational Assistant for further processing on a timely basis.

c. Distribute, collect, and grade student assignments on a daily basis.

d. Coordinate with School Principal, Scheduling Coordinator, Core Staff Supervisor and/or Clinical Director to ensure coverage of classroom when school is not in session or teacher will be knowingly absent.

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Serve on committees, as assigned.

2. Be punctual for school, meetings, and all necessary reports.

3. Plan, prepare, and implement special educational off-campus outings for residents. Act as chauffer to supervise students during outings.

4. At all times represent Aurora Plains Academy in a positive, professional manner.

5. Attend meetings, as assigned.

6. Maintain professional growth by participating in the Staff Development Program.

7. Be a team member and develop positive and professional relationships with all staff.

8. Comply with all policies, rules, and regulations established by Aurora Plains Academy as a condition of employment.

9. Ensure a safe and secure environment at all times. Utilize approved intervention techniques whenever necessary.

10. Understand and abide by laws and statutes governing child abuse and neglect reporting.

11. Other duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE: Must be Highly Qualified in area of expertise, demonstrated by completion of PRAXIS II test of subject knowledge and teaching in reading, writing, mathematics, and other areas of the basic elementary school curriculum.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: No direct reports.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Bachelors degree or higher from an accredited institution.

2. Meet professional teacher education requirements of school, district, and state.

3. Single subject teaching credential or certification if teaching a specialized subject.

4. State certification.

5. Highly Qualified in area of expertise.

6. Relevant teaching experience.

7. Knowledge of relevant technology.

8. Excellent communication skills; written and oral.

9. Must not have on record a substantiated record of child abuse or neglect
