Position SummaryThis position will provide individual and group instruction for Southeast Technical College’s (STC) Adult Education and Literacy Program (AEL) to prepare students for employment opportunities, training, and post-secondary education. This individual will continually assess and enhance the program according to the educational standards of STC and its accrediting bodies.
Please direct any questions regarding this position to the hiring manager, Jennifer Keyes 605-367-4467. Essential Functions- Evaluate basic academic skills of adults through accurate use of summative and formative assessment tools
- Manage student files and accurately complete assessment, demographic, grade, and other reports as required
- Advise students in the program to provide a point of contact for all academic and student concerns
- Complete non-teaching department responsibilities including duties for recruitment, retention, and reporting
- Disseminate program information via phone and in person
- Schedule and conduct intake appointments for potential students
- Teach a competency-based curriculum that will assist students to meet their educational goals
- Utilize teaching techniques consistent with the research on characteristics of effective teaching
- Develop interpersonal relationships and establish positive rapport with students and colleagues
- Establish student success as a primary teaching goal and provide opportunities for all students to experience success
- Promote academic achievement for all students, including advising
- Monitor student classroom effort and homework providing the most efficient use on academic learning time
- Establish a learning climate that promotes the orderly behavior of all students while maintaining the dignity and positive self-concept of each student
- Adhere to the direction of the AEL Program Director and administrative supervision
- Participate in professional staff development activities
- Perform other duties as assigned
Position Qualifications- Education: Bachelor’s degree in education or related field required
- Experience: Three years of teaching experience in AEL relating to GED and/or English as a second language instruction preferred
- Other requirements:
- Computer skills: Proficient in Microsoft Office and Microsoft Windows
- Ability to work flexible hours, including a minimum of 2 evenings a week and 2 Saturdays a month
- Strong background in math, English, and/or special education
- Must maintain a high level of confidentiality to work with a client’s personal information and instructional progress
- Encourage change and new ideas within the organization and assist employees who may need help with adjusting to any changes that occur
- Communication: ability to actively listen and to effectively communicate with others through written and oral communication
- Leadership: ability to make decisions, delegate tasks, be innovative, negotiate, problem solve, build teams through coaching and development, resolve conflicts, hold yourself and other accountable, and work under pressure.
- Business acumen: ability to grasp and understand business concepts and issues that include understanding accounting information, preparing, and managing budgets, and making sound, long-term, organizational development decisions

- Strategic planning: ability to develop and achieve short and long-term goals for the organization
Physical Demands and Work EnvironmentGeneral office environment with standard office equipment available. Lighting and temperature are adequate. Moderate noise levels typical of an office environment due to staff and student conversations and office equipment. Occasionally exposed to outdoor weather conditions when traveling to other locations. Some location visitations may not be climate controlled and are subject to a variety of temperatures that could include coldness and humidity. Job is sedentary with physical activities normally required in an office environment.
