Bender Companies is seeking an organized and detail-oriented Assistant Controller to join our team and support our operations. Our two companies, Bender Midwest Properties and Bender Commercial Real Estate, are established and growing real estate and property management firms. The Assistant Controller will assist in managing the day-to-day financial operations of the company, including overseeing accounting processes, preparing financial reports, managing accounts payable/receivable, assisting with financial analysis and budgeting, and payroll and benefits administration. The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of accounting principles, experience in real estate or property management accounting, and the ability to collaborate with multiple teams.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in the preparation of monthly and annual financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements.
- Oversee and manage general ledger activities, ensuring accuracy and compliance with accounting standards.
- Assist in budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis.
- Manage accounts payable and accounts receivable processes.
- Reconcile bank accounts and financial transactions.
- Assist with the preparation of property-level financials for reporting to owners and investors.
- Ensure proper documentation and accounting for real estate transactions.
- Assist in the preparation for audits and manage requests from external auditors.
- Prepare and review company level financial reports, operating statements, and tax filings.
- Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements and internal accounting policies.
- Support the VP of Finance in financial analysis and decision-making.
- Assist with ad-hoc financial projects and other duties as needed.
Payroll & Benefits Duties:
- Administer the payroll process, including data entry, review, and timely processing of payroll.
- Ensure accurate calculation of wages, taxes, deductions, and benefits for all employees.
- Manage employee benefit programs, including health, dental, vision, life insurance, and retirement plans.
- Respond to employee inquiries regarding payroll and benefits issues, ensuring clear and accurate communication.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll regulations and tax laws.
- Prepare payroll-related reports and assist with annual tax filings, including W-2s and 1099s.
- Maintain accurate records of employee compensation, deductions, and benefits enrollment.
- Assist with open enrollment for employee benefits and ensure accurate data entry for benefits elections.
Job Requirements
Qualifications:
• 2+ years of experience in accounting, with a preference for real estate or property management experience.
• Strong knowledge of accounting principles and practices, including GAAP.
• Proficient in accounting software (experience with AppFolio or other property management software is a plus).
• Advanced Excel skills, with the ability to analyze financial data and generate reports.
• Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
• Experience with payroll processing and benefits administration.
• Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
