This Assistant Park Manager is based out of Angostura Recreation Area south of Hot Springs.

Angostura Reservoir is a water-lover's haven with breathtaking, scenic views. Offering crystal clear waters, 36 miles of shoreline, and some of the finest sandy beaches in the state, the area boasts many water sports and summer fun activities - camping, boating, fishing, and swimming. The park offers four campgrounds which include 166 campsites (160 electrical) and 14 camper cabins. Its strong fishery is well known for its walleye, smallmouth bass, crappie, and supports northern pike, largemouth bass, perch, and bluegill.

The word "angostura" is Spanish for "narrows". Angostura is one of the few large reservoirs in western South Dakota. The dam was built in 1949 by the Bureau of Reclamation across the Cheyenne River for irrigation purposes. The average depth of this reservoir is 29 feet, and the deepest portion of the pool is 75 feet deep when full.

The Assistant Park Manager also assists in the management of Sheps Canyon Recreation Area. Nestled along Sheps Canyon Bay, Sheps Canyon Campground is the newest campground on Angostura Reservoir. It offers great access to the boat ramp and excellent shore fishing opportunities. The area consists of 22 electrical campsites, 1 camper cabin, 1 comfort station, 40 non-electrical campsites, 11 horse campsites, and a modern lodge.

The Assistant Park Manager provides administrative assistance to the District Park Supervisor and Park Manager including accounting for park revenue, permits, and deposits; managing a point-of-sale system; managing fee collection staff and volunteer staff; coordinating campground reservations; compiling statistics for monthly reports; serving as a contact point for park users; coordinating special events; and attending public meetings and events. The Assistant Park Manager is the main contact for seasonal employees in the absence of the Park Manager. The position will also perform building maintenance and janitorial duties of park facilities and daily maintenance of the park grounds, campsite areas, trails, and boat ramps throughout the park district. This position will work weekends and nights.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid drivers license
  • Pesticide Applicators license within the first 6 months of hire.


The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
A detail-oriented mindset with an outgoing personality. Experienced skills with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Windows 11, and social media. A degree relating to park management, business, biology, outdoor education, or something relating is preferred. Have comfortably worked with a point-of-sale system or are willing to learn. Public relations experience dealing with conflicts concerning the public, volunteers, and/or staff. The desire to learn the Department of Game, Fish, and Park's policies, rules, regulations, and be able to teach them to volunteers, staff, and the public.

Knowledge of:

  • the principles and practices of park management;
  • federal and state laws and regulations pertaining to wildlife habitat resources;
  • interpretive programming;
  • natural, cultural, and environmental resources and related management practices;
  • South Dakota history and geography; architectural history, and historic preservation;
  • landscaping design and implementation;
  • basic carpentry, plumbing and electrical skills sufficient to perform required building maintenance and repair;
  • boating and camping laws;
  • volunteer programs and volunteering;
  • firefighting safety practices and techniques;
  • cleaning methods and chemicals.


Skill to:
  • help conduct daily business of the park such as, selling park entrance licenses, reservations, and seasonal work schedules. Help interview and train new and seasonal staff. Know/learn how to operate many different tools and machinery equipment.

Ability to:
  • communicate effectively with park users, other staff, division managers, landowners and the general public;
  • visualize park enhancements • enforce park rules and regulations;
  • answer questions pertaining to camping, wildlife, hunting, fishing, and related topics;
  • operate, repair and maintain a variety of equipment and tools;
  • perform administrative tasks such as keeping accurate records, collecting money auditing others' records, buying supplies;
  • use a computer and various software and teach others how to use them;
  • help provide work direction to permanent and seasonal employees, volunteers and trusties.

This position is eligible for Veterans' Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
