This position falls under the Construction and Facilities Management office, Operation and Maintenance Branch within the South Dakota Army National Guard/South Dakota Department of the Military. This Position is the Building Maintenance Specialist for the Yankton Armory, Vermillion sites, and Wagner sites located out of Yankton SD. The incumbent will be engaged in all forms of facility maintenance including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, preventive maintenance, janitorial, grounds maintenance, snow removal, and a wide variety of other maintenance related tasks.

This position within the maintenance field will require experience with all areas of facilities maintenance; preventive maintenance of grounds equipment & building mechanical systems; interacting with customers; and scheduling and completing maintenance projects, reports, and records with the contractors and vendors, all while ensuring compliance with department policies and procedures. This position will be required to achieve and maintain a very high level of specific technical expertise regarding theory of operations with HVAC systems, electrical, plumbing, and customer service. This position will require troubleshooting of electrical and mechanical systems and the use of diagnostic meters, tracking of critical outages, and work orders.
  • Work schedule: Tuesday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (10 hour days); work schedule may vary due to emergency situations or snow removal operations.
  • The individual selected will undergo a National Security Check to obtain a Common Access Card (CAC) for access to the federal computer system.
  • Must possess a valid driver license.
  • Able to obtain Chemical Applicator's licenses.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

A license as electrician or plumber or received technical vocational training in heating, ventilation, air conditioning, or automated building energy management systems. Specialized experience may be used inlieu of a degree.Knowledge of:
  • record keeping and report writing;
  • occupational hazards and safety precautions appropriate for maintenance or repair projects;
  • methods and practices of Building Construction;
  • methods and practices of General Building Maintenance;
  • methods and practices of maintaining HVAC, Electrical, and Plumbing Systems;
  • methods and practices of Custodial Services;
  • methods and practices of Grounds Maintenance;
  • tools and equipment associated with maintenance activities;
  • State of South Dakota procurement regulations.

Ability to:
  • communicate information clearly and concisely;
  • establish and maintain effective working relationships with others;
  • operate computers effectively;
  • read and interpret blueprints and construction plans;
  • accurately estimate costs of repairs and material requirements;
  • operate construction equipment and power tools;
  • access the needs for repairs or preventive maintenance of buildings and equipment;
  • lift 50 pounds or more;
  • work from ladders, scaffolding, or in confined areas;
  • work outdoors.

This position is eligible for Veterans' Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
