Position Description
Responsible for screening, evaluating, and treating clients with substance use disorders.
Duties / Responsibilities:
Complete integrated assessments, which include both functional and diagnostic components. The assessment shall establish the historical development and dysfunctional nature of the client's alcohol and drug abuse or dependence and shall assess the client's treatment needs.
An addiction counselor shall develop an individualized treatment plan based upon the integrated assessment for each client admitted to an outpatient treatment program, intensive outpatient treatment program, day treatment program, clinically-managed low-intensity residential treatment program, or medically-monitored intensive inpatient treatment program.
Facilitate outpatient treatment services in a group setting, as well as individual sessions.
Participate in the creation of the client’s discharge and aftercare planning and connect to resources as needed.
Provide any combination of individual, group, or family counseling services of any intensity and frequency as required by the continued service
Provide crisis intervention services as needed.
Administer various relevant screening to appropriately identify treatment level/needs.
Maintain communication with permitted informal and formal supports for each client.
Regularly monitor and assess client’s progress and need for higher level of care.
Maintain compliance with documentation requirements pursuant to state, federal and agency regulations
Maintain strict confidentiality.
Required Skills / Abilities:
Understanding of mental health and addiction services
Understanding of American Society of Addiction Medicine
Knowledgeable about the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act and 42 CFR, Part 2
Ability to maintain confidentiality pursuant to HIPAA and 42 CFR, Part 2 guidelines and agency policies
Ability to be flexible especially with scheduling
Ability to perform and prioritize multiple functions and tasks
Strong communication, organizational, and planning skills
Ability to work under pressure and plan personal workload effectively
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients
Ability to work as part of a team
Excellent computer skills/proficient in computer applications, specifically MS Office
Strong organizational skills
Ability to meet deadlines
May need to use personal vehicle for work-related tasks
Must have a valid driver’s license and proof of current auto insurance
Education and Experience:
Minimum of an associate degree in the social sciences or human services field
Agency employees providing addiction counseling shall meet the standards for certified/licensed addiction counselors in accordance with BAPP requirements. A certificate and identification card issued by BAPP is evidence of meeting the standards for an addiction counselor. Counselor certification recognition shall be obtained before performing any addiction counseling functions.
Physical Requirements:
Requires periods of moving throughout the office and traveling to other locations within the community/designated coverage area
Requires periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times
