The Charge Nurse in Assisted Living is responsible for a variety of duties to provide quality nursing care to residents and to coordinate total nursing care for residents. As well as implementing specific procedures and programs; participating with the Director of Assisted Living (DOAL)in establishing specific goals; for determining work procedures and expediting work flow; for ensuring compliance with all operating policies and procedures of Dow Rummel, the South Dakota Department of Health regulations and Federal Health Care Administration regulations; for communicating with and supervising appropriate personnel; for providing daily reports and other periodic reports; and for performing all the duties of a certified nursing assistant when required.

STATUS:
Hourly, Non-Exempt
HOURS:
12-24 hours per week: 1-2 shifts per week 6am to 6:30pm.
REQUIREMENTS
Must possess, as a minimum, a nursing degree from an accredited college or university, or be a graduate from an approved LPN or RN program and in good standing and currently licensed by the state of South Dakota,
Minimum of 3 years’ experience in long term care or senior living facility
QUALIFICATIONS
Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.
Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies, and the general public.
Knowledgeable of nursing and medical practices and procedures, as well as laws, regulations, and guidelines that pertain to the care of geriatric patients.
Leadership and supervisory ability and the willingness to work harmoniously with and supervise other personnel.
Displays a patient, tactful, cheerful, and enthusiastic disposition, as well as the willingness to handle difficult residents.
Willingness to seek out new methods and principles and be willing to incorporate them into existing nursing practices. Ability to relate information concerning a resident’s condition.
Must be able push and pull 60 pounds, must be able to lift 50 pounds and must be able to carry 15 pounds with two hands
Ability to relate to a wide variety of people and to serve, listen and provide guidance and leadership to those who lead the variety of departments this position oversees.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Model the mission, vision, and values of Dow Rummel;
Evaluating staff performance and providing corrective measures if necessary
Assessing, monitoring, and caring for patience
Communicating with DOAL regarding staff performance and personnel issues and changes to treatment protocols
Remaining calm under pressure and be able to delegate staff responsibilities quickly and effectively during busy shifts or emergency situations
Develops positive relationships on behalf of Dow Rummel with Government Regulators, families, staff, area Health Care Community, and the Community at large;
Be alert and active in supporting facility's commitment to safe practices, infection control, and respect for residents' rights;
Evaluates and/or assesses residents on admission to develop interim care plan and further assesses in depth to contribute to the complete care plan.
Updates care plans as warranted and required.
As needed or required, attends, and participates at Plan of Care meetings as scheduled.
Evaluates and/or assesses residents and analyzes obtained information to develop appropriate interventions to prevent decline per scope of practice; records signs of change in condition; notifies appropriate staff of changes; observes conditions that indicate possible need for other nursing programs and then notifies appropriate staff per facility protocol of the need for evaluation; informs the physician of changes in conditions when appropriate.
Ensure that safety and sanitation standards are maintained in residents’ rooms and all work areas.
Prepare and administer medications as ordered by the physician in accordance with the facility’s policies, procedures, and scope of practice.
Order prescribed medications, supplies, and equipment.
Maintains accountability for controlled substances inventories and reports discrepancies on a per shift basis.
Participate in the orientation of new staff to the unit.
Make rounds with physicians, physician’s assistants, and nurse practitioners.
Responds to emergencies; assesses the condition of the resident; decides on the type of medical attention required; calls appropriate ambulance service if needed; notifies family/POA when resident is transferred or admitted to the hospital; notifies the physician when a change in condition occurs.
