The Clinical Informatics Specialist serves as an advisor to vendors and clinical leadership within the SD DOC to extract and collect data according to organizational requirements and/or required reporting to federal, state, and other official agencies. The Clinical Informatics Specialist will have a deep understanding of the data collection and analysis, CorrecTek EHR systems, continuous quality indicators (CQI) and nursing policies and clinical standards. The Clinical Informatics Specialist will interact across all levels of the organization and the Clinical Services division. The position will require the ability to present various quality and compliance reports in various forms which may include graphs, charts, diagrams, narrative, and physical representations.

This role focuses on utilizing the effective implementation of technology and the analysis of informatics to enhance patient care, streamline processes, and optimize access to data used for decision-making. The candidate collaborates with IT professionals, contracted vendors, and clinical staff. This position will report to the Clinical Compliance and Education Manager.

What you will do:

Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Maintains a working knowledge of the data schema for the healthcare entity.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of clinical policies and standards.
  • Documents functional and technical requirements of key clinical projects and requests.
  • Translates requirements into a functional and relative reporting solution.
  • Assists in the planning, development, testing, and delivery of reports and validation of clinical data integration among the various application environments.
  • Provides data as directed by management while maintaining a reliable audit trail.
  • Presents information effectively and can speak to the sources of data as requested.
  • Facilitate communication between BIT, administrators, and clinical leadership.
  • Plans and conducts internal quality audits.
  • Oversee the implementation and optimization of healthcare information systems.
  • Implement and monitor security measures to protect healthcare information.
  • Stay current with healthcare informatics regulations and accreditation standards.
  • Collaborate with the compliance team to design and implement informatics solutions that enhance patient outcomes and safety.
  • Identify trends and patterns within data to be used for strategic planning.
  • Assist with developing clinical educational materials and resources to support ongoing training efforts of the clinical division.
  • Provide training to Clinical Services staff on the use of healthcare information systems.
  • Ensure the accuracy and integrity of healthcare data, including offender records and clinical documentation.
  • Conduct workflow analysis to identify opportunities for process improvement and efficiency.
  • Analyze informatics tools to optimize technology access and improve daily operations for Clinical Services staff.


Qualifications:

  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse in SD.
  • Have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing with 5 to 8 years of progressive RN experience or a Master of Science in Nursing with a concentration in informatics and 3 to 5 years of progressive RN experience.
  • A minimum of 1-year clinical experience in a correctional setting is desired.
  • Experience with CorrecTek EHR is preferred.
  • Experience working with data collection, analysis, and information reporting.
  • Proficient in query and report writing skills utilizing approved software applications.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and related applications
  • Demonstrated proficiency in analyzing, linking, and rationalizing data across multiple applications.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of database schemas and the extraction of data.
  • Demonstrated capability to convey results to multiple audiences and explain the underlying data using effective communication skills.
  • General understanding of regulatory/accreditation requirements and industry best practices.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the healthcare environment and applicable terminology

Individuals selected for the position will have the opportunity to carry Oleoresin Capsicum (OC/pepper spray) if desired. If OC spray is carried, the staff carrying OC spay will be required to have direct (level 1) exposure during the training program. Individuals selected for the position must successfully complete a written and practical self-defense exam and successfully complete CPR to AHA guidelines - this includes successful completion of the practical/hands on portion as well as the written exam. Selected individuals must possess the physical ability to successfully complete the practical self-defense exam, which involves the following:
  • Lift arms above head and kick as high as own waist;
  • Stabilize another person to accomplish a controlled take down;
  • Use arms, palms of hands, shins, and feet to deliver blows;
  • Withstand impact (slow speed or with a safety bag) on own body from strikes/blows;
  • Rotate body 90 degrees with feet planted for striking with foot or using a defensive tactic;
  • Get down on one or both knees and up again with multiple repetitions;

Additionally, TB (tuberculosis) screening is required of all new employees upon hire.
