Job Summary:
The South Dakota Office of Vital Records is seeking a Death Registration Specialist. This position is responsible for ensuring proper medical registration and documentation of all deaths occurring in South Dakota. This position also serves as the primary liaison between death certifiers such as licensed physicians and county coroners and provides technical assistance to ensure that South Dakota death certificates are filed in accordance with state and national guidelines.
Specific duties include: Reviewing, coding and registering cause of death on South Dakota death certificates, completing follow up with doctors, medical records personnel, and county coroners to verify or request additional information to ensure adequate terminology and completeness, creating and maintaining training resources and guides for death record certifiers, performing data quality improvement activities to ensure accurate and complete data, and assisting medical certifiers with completing amendments to medical information on death certificates.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:- experience in medical coding and/or medical disease processes preferred;
- possess strong leadership skills including the ability to make technical decisions, and the ability to work collaboratively with departments, industry and multiple stakeholders;
- essential skills for successful performance in this position include excellent attention to detail and excellent written and verbal communication skills .
Knowledge of:
- Public health resources;

- applicable state and federals laws, rules and regulations;
- general methods and processes in areas such as purchasing, budgeting, accounting and other administrative activities pertinent to government operations;
