Location: Hamlin County, South Dakota
Hours: Swing Shifts. Full-Time. 

Deputy Sheriff 
Salary:  $26.00 for Certified in South Dakota / $24.00 for Non-Certified
Closing Date:  Saturday, November 2nd, 2024 at 10:00 pm Central Time

Position Summary: A deputy sheriff provides general law enforcement work to maintain law and order throughout Hamlin County in South Dakota. Responsibilities include answering calls for services, conduct civil process/service, investigating illegal or suspicious activities, helping fulfill the agency's requirement on providing hours to contract communities of Bryant, Castlewood, Estelline, and Hayti, being involved in all three schools in the county, transporting inmates, court security, traffic enforcement, serving arrest warrants, and investigating vehicle crashes. 

Starting Salary: Salary is $26.00 for applicants law enforcement certified in South Dakota and $24.00 for those not certified in South Dakota.  Overtime opportunities are available after the completion of field training. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Working knowledge of the principles, policies and procedures, codes, laws, and statutes of law enforcement operations. Capability to work independently. Ability to make appropriate decisions quickly and to act with tact and impartiality. Ability to direct and supervise subordinates. Must be a credible witness in court. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the public. Ability to maintain professional appearance and demeanor. Once hired, applicants must live in Hamlin County. 

Requirements: Applicants must be 21 to perform law enforcement duties, but if you are 20 and are close to turning 21, apply.   The position requires physical demands, including bending, pushing, pulling, reaching overhead, kneeling, and gripping. The candidate must also be able to perform job duties in a stationary position and may occasionally be called to lift objects over 50 lbs. If not certified, all applicants must be eligible for certification under the South Dakota Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Training Commission and become certified within one year of the hiring date.  Once certified, deputies must maintain their certification under state law.  Once hired, applicants must live in Hamlin County within a reasonable time.   

Schedule: Deputies typically work afternoons, evenings, and nights throughout the week, with about four 10-hour shifts (two/three days on, two days off) and about one to two nights being the primary deputy on-call per week.  Typically, every other weekend is off. Deputies get paid an additional two hours for being the primary deputy on-call on top of the 10 hours of shift work. Overtime opportunities are available after field training. Deputies get eight hours for any holiday approved by the county commissioners, with additional extra hours for working a “major holiday” such as Thanksgiving, Independence Day, or Christmas Day.
