A. Distinguishing Features:
A Class “AA” Mechanic shall have a complete knowledge of the design, adjustment, overhaul, operation, maintenance, and repair of all systems and subsystems of SAM coaches and related shop equipment. This employee must be able to diagnose, repair, and/or replace any subsystem associated with heavy, medium, and/or light duty SAM coaches or automotive equipment.
Job Summary:
Performs general and complex mechanical repairs and preventative maintenance activities on buses, automotive equipment, and shoe and building-related equipment with little or no supervision. May function as first line supervisor of maintenance activities in the absence of Maintenance Manager.

B. Nature and Scope:
1. Functions: (The following examples of duties are intended to be illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive or restrictive.)
a. Repair engine-related problems.
b. Repair transmission-related problems.
c. Repair electrical-related problems.
d. Repair mechanical-related problems.
e. Repair steering, steering gear, and suspension-related problems.
f. Perform complete inspections and carry out preventative maintenance programs.
g. Repair air conditioning system-related problems.
h. Repair brake system-related problems.
i. Repair hydraulic system-related problems including steering and wheelchair lift-related problems.
j. Able to operate and repair all types of equipment owned and operated by the SAM system.
k. Diagnose and repair fare collection equipment.
l. Perform related work as required.
2. Staff Supervision:
This is a non-supervisory position.
3. Challenges:
The incumbent is challenged to properly maintain all vehicles, equipment, and property so as to ensure safe, timely, and efficient delivery of service. The incumbent is also challenged to maintain accurate and up-to-date records and reports on all activities involved in the maintenance and repair of such vehicles, equipment, and property, and to maintain a safe and clean work environment.
4. Contact with Others:
Working relationships are typically with other maintenance workers, drivers, and transportation supervisors. Occasional contact with suppliers and vendors.
5. Working Conditions:
Typical automotive/industrial shop environment. Works in close proximity to moving equipment and vehicles with some exposure to related fumes and chemicals. May be required to work in all weather conditions.
6. Physical Requirements:
Standing is required. The incumbent must be able to work on their feet eight hours per day.
Lifting/carrying is required. The worker must be able to lift 100 pounds and carry parts, equipment, and supplies.
Reaching is required.
Visual inspection is required.
Must have excellent manual dexterity.
7. Machines, Tools, Equipment, and Work Aids:
All tools necessary to perform functions of position.
8. Performance Measures:
Performance may be measured by the degree to which all equipment and property is functioning in a safe and efficient manner. Performance may also be measured by the maintenance of a safe and clean work environment and by the maintenance of accurate and up-to-date records of all maintenance-related activities.
C. Minimum Qualifications:
1. Education:
Graduation from an accredited high school or possess a GED certificate or equivalent or graduation from a trade or vocation school. Additional training at manufacturer’s schools, courses, or seminars is highly desirable.
2. Experience:
Must have demonstrated the knowledge of mechanical maintenance repair methods and practices, particularly in regards to diesel equipment; ability to direct highly varied and complex operations related to vehicle and equipment service.
