The South Dakota Department of Education seeks a strong leader to direct, oversee, and manage complex and varied child nutrition and food distribution programs funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service.

WHAT DOES THE DIRECTOR DO?
The Director of Child and Adult Nutrition Services is responsible for:
  • Personnel management and supervision of staff;
  • Successful budget management including oversight and delivery of more than $60 million in federal funding;
  • Interpreting and overseeing implementation of policies and procedures to ensure local agencies operate in compliance with federal regulation and policy, state law and policy, and state agency policy;
  • Administration of daily activities to ensure division is in compliance with state and federal requirements and contributes to Department of Education goals;
  • Development and maintenance of positive relationships with local agencies and key stakeholders.


This position serves on the Department of Education's Leadership Team. This is a full-time position with the Department of Education, Division of Child and Adult Nutrition Services. WHO'S THE IDEAL CANDIDATE?

  • Someone who has the ability to lead, manage, and supervise people to support the division's mission. Ideal candidates will have knowledge in areas such as institutional food service operations, management, business, nutrition education, or federal programs, but such is not required.
  • Preferred candidates will hold a minimum of a bachelor's degree with an academic major in the areas of food and nutrition, business, management, public administration, or a related field.


Ability to:

  • provide leadership through vision-setting, budgeting, planning, recruiting/retaining staff, and developing procedures for effectively carrying out the division's work;
  • communicate clearly and concisely, both in speech and in writing;
  • effectively manage time and delegation of work on multiple short- and long-term tasks;
  • read, understand, and explain detailed information in regulations and policies;
  • develop and maintain professional relationships in order to work collaboratively with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, allied agencies and organizations, and other contacts in the child nutrition and food distribution arenas;
  • deal tactfully and effectively with state and local agency personnel, administrators, and the public;
  • review and evaluate methods, processes, and outcomes;
  • travel in and out of state, as driven by business needs, to provide technical assistance and to obtain and provide professional development;
  • work at a detailed level, including accurate report preparation and budgeting and reviewing expenditures.
