The South Dakota Department of Public Safety's mission is to keep South Dakota a safe place in which to live, work, visit and raise a family. The department is looking for an applicant to lead the Weights/Measures and Inspections Program. The position serves in a leadership role responsible for providing guidance to support 26 staff located across the state. This position is part of the Department of Public Safety's senior staff team that helps support the mission of the department.
This position is responsible for:
- overseeing the Inspections Program to ensure regularly scheduled inspections are being completed for South Dakota Departments of Education, Health, Social Services, South Dakota Fire Marshal, South Dakota Lottery, Office of Weights & Measures, and USDA Country of Origin Labeling;
- communicating with state regulatory agencies regarding their inspections;
- overseeing the Weights and Measures Program including the State Metrology Laboratory, ensuring an equitable market place;
- reviewing and assessing the validity of complaints, assigning staff to respond, and determining corrective action;
- managing the budgets of the Inspections and the Weights and Measures programs.
In-State travel required due to staff located across the state. Out-of-State travel opportunities are available to attend work related conferences.
Licenses and Certifications: A valid South Dakota Drivers license.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have: A bachelor's degree in administration, business, management or a related field, or equivalent work experience is preferred. Additionally, ideal candidates should posses the following:
- Self-Motivation. Much of the decision making for the Inspections and Weights and Measures program is made by this position. This position needs to be able to stay focused to do this job well.
- Positive Attitude. As a leader, it is important to provide staff and customers with leadership that reflects a positive outlook while still following all laws, rules, and policies.
- Technically Savvy. Technology has become important in how the Inspections and Weights and Measures programs operate. A solid understanding of computers and other electronic devices and software is important to stay "up to speed" with changes in many industries our programs oversee.
Knowledge of:
- supervisory and management techniques;
- statutes and rules applicable to the inspections being performed by the program;
- scientific basis for weights and measures;
- importance of accuracy and repeatability in maintaining public confidence and marketplace equity;
- basic computer operations;
- family and group daycares, video lottery, fire safety, weights and measures, and public health sanitation.
Ability to:
- research, understand, and interpret laws and regulations;
- deal tactfully with others;
- communicate clearly and concisely;
- manage multiple programs and budgets;
- manage personnel located around the state while ensuring consistent procedures and processes;
- make decisions affecting public health and welfare;
- maintain self-control under stressful situations;
- evaluate the work of others;
- develop, implement, and interpret policies and procedures.
