The Governor's Office of Economic Development (GOED) is hiring a Fiscal Accountant to join their Pierre, SD team. This is a fantastic opportunity to apply your accounting, analysis, and audit skills to directly impact economic growth in South Dakota in a multi-faceted role. The Fiscal Accountant position with GOED is a great place for a motivated individual to initiate and direct challenging accounting and/or auditing projects and serve as a technical resource to others.

Role summary: The Fiscal Accountant will work with multiple programs/funds, maintain a chart of accounts, finalize monthly reports, audits, annual examinations as well as the ACFR (Annual Consolidated Financial Report) and assist with annual budgeting process. This role will also lead complex projects and serve as an audit SME (subject matter expert).

About GOED: We help drive economic development across South Dakota by providing an array of services such as financing, research, and networking to help new and existing businesses flourish.

Key responsibilities:

  • Prepare and maintain a variety of financial records and reports.
  • Serve as SME for internal and external audits.
  • Maintains current working knowledge of accounting, audit, rules, and regulations best practices.
  • Serve as coach and mentor to other staff members, including review of work by junior colleagues.
  • Assist with software system improvements/implementations.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive data.
  • Travel occasionally in-state for various events and team collaboration.
  • Other duties as may be assigned.


The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

For the A3 classification, a candidate for this position must have a 4-year Accounting Degree and 3-5 years of progressive experience equivalent to Level 2 of the Accounting Job Family OR a 4-year Accounting Degree and total of 4-7 years cumulative experience in accounting.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Microsoft Excel, Word, Query, and other desktop tools;
  • Governmental (fund) accounting;
  • Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP);
  • Government Accounting Standards Board (GASB) statements;
  • Generally Accepted Auditing Standards (GAAS) and Governmental Auditing Standards;
  • Governmental fiscal administrative processes.


Ability to:

  • communicate information clearly and concisely;

  • establish and maintain effective working relationships with others;
  • pay close attention to details.

This position is eligible for Veterans' Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
