The Grounds Crew Leader/Equipment Mechanic installs and repairs mechanical systems as well as performs preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment in the Grounds shop. Duties may include, but are not limited to, performing minor and major preventative maintenance on equipment/vehicles (e.g., chassis lubrication, fill windshield washer tank, change oil and oil filter, check various items); assembling, setting up, and making adjustments and/or adaptations to new equipment/vehicles (e.g., changing appropriate fluids and spark plugs, replacing brakes, etc.); transporting equipment/vehicles to obtain repairs, parts, and/or services; performing repairs on existing equipment/vehicles (e.g., brakes, belts, cooling system, suspension, electrical, etc.); performing preventive maintenance and repair on power and hand tools. Successful incumbents will also participate in grounds maintenance, including the care of lawns, trees, flowers, shrubs, sidewalks, and snow removal.

Indoor and outside work with occasional exposure to extreme weather conditions is required. Also includes exposure to various operating equipment and moving mechanical parts (e.g., high-pressure hoses and connections, power presses, cutting torches; and exposure to fumes (e.g., welding, exhaust systems, solvents, gasoline, paints,). May occasionally require work at heights above the ground.

Work Hours are 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday-Friday. Incumbents will occasionally be required to work outside of regularly established schedule, which may include on-call time during nights and weekends at certain times of the year.

Licenses and Certifications:

Must possess, or have the ability to obtain, a Driver's license, and a class B CDL with air brakes endorsement.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

  • prior mechanic experience;
  • light to heavy equipment operation experience is beneficial.


Knowledge of:

  • standard principles, methods, tools, and equipment of the automotive trade;
  • principles of internal combustion engines, drivetrains, gear boxes, hydraulic systems and electrical systems;
  • occupational hazards and safety precautions of the mechanics trade;
  • repair and preventative maintenance practices on equipment ad vehicles; and,
  • grounds maintenance knowledge.


Skill to:

  • operate a variety of hand, power, and shop tools; and,
  • operate front end loaders, snow plows, and forklifts.


Ability to:

  • display high standards of ethical conduct;
  • work well with others;
  • complete assigned work efficiently, accurately, and thoroughly; and,
  • perform heavy lifting (50+ lbs.) and physical labor.


This position is eligible for Veterans' Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
