Position Description: The South Dakota Department of Social Services is seeking a student intern to join our finance team for Summer 2025. This position will report to the Department's Chief Financial Officer and assist in multiple areas of the financial management of the department. Areas of experiential education will include budgeting, accounting, financial reporting, accounts payable, auditing, fraud investigations, and internal controls. Specific duties include assisting in the preparation and initial review of service contracts as part of the Department's annual financial contract approval process; conducting research and analyzing data to help prepare the department's annual budget request; and developing financial templates and reports that effectively communicate financial information to broad audiences. Additionally, the selected applicant will have the opportunity to work on a specific project tailored to their interests and coursework needs.
A well-qualified applicant will have completed least two years of coursework that includes Accounting, Economics, Finance, or Business/Public Administration. Interns must be proficient in Microsoft Office products and have advanced skills in Microsoft Excel. This position will also require the ability to write, proofread, and check financial documents for accuracy; manage time and meet deadlines while balancing several tasks; establish and maintain effective working relationships; and communicate information concisely and effectively.
Qualifications:
Applicant must be enrolled as a part-time/full-time student at a college, university, or technical institute at the time they apply. By the start of the internship, the student should have completed one year (nine months) of their chosen program.
All students are encouraged to apply, but preference may be given to applicants with a standing of junior/senior, South Dakota residents, and students of South Dakota institutions.
