Position Description:
Fisheries management interns will be involved in all aspects of fisheries operations, including management activities such as lake and stream surveys, angler creel surveys, and data entry. They may also assist with trap and transfer or hatchery fish stocking activities. Fisheries management interns play a key role in numerous fisheries research projects, primarily by collecting data and conducting literature reviews, but also by assisting with data analysis and manuscript preparation. Interns may also be assigned lead responsibilities on a specific research project. Within the last 10 years over 20 fisheries management interns working in Region 1 have been primary or secondary authors on peer-reviewed published manuscripts. Research topics include fish population dynamics, fish movement, water chemistry, fish behavior, and assessments of various fish tagging procedures.
Qualifications: Applicant must be enrolled as a part-time/full-time student at a college, university, or technical institute at the time they apply. By the start of the internship, the student should have completed one year (nine months) of their chosen program.
All students are encouraged to apply, but preference may be given to applicants with a standing of junior/senior, South Dakota residents, and students of South Dakota institutions.
