Position Description:
The South Dakota Department of Transportation is seeking a motivated individual pursuing a degree in Civil or Geological Engineering who wishes to broaden their knowledge of geology and how it relates to transportation engineering. We are looking for both Engineering students and non-Engineering students. Selected candidates will join a team of professionals working in one of the most geologic diverse states in the nation.

Geotechnical Engineering interns will assist professional staff with the collection and analysis of data obtained from geotechnical investigations and instrumentation throughout the state. Hiking and light physical labor will be required. Interns will enjoy a balance of field and office work, typically working 40 hours per week Monday through Friday. Work schedule is flexible depending on workload, work type, and travel required. Statewide, overnight travel will occasionally be required.

Learning opportunities include collecting and interpreting instrumentation data; assisting drill crews with soil borings, field testing, and soil sampling; geophysical investigations; lab testing; drafting; and technical communication. Interns often participate in construction inspections and geohazard evaluation.

Knowledge of South Dakota geology and geotechnical engineering principals would be beneficial.

Qualifications:
Applicant must be enrolled as a part-time/full-time student at a college, university, or technical institute at the time they apply. By the start of the internship, the student should have completed one year (nine months) of their chosen program.

All students are encouraged to apply, but preference may be given to applicants with a standing of junior/senior, South Dakota residents, and students of South Dakota institutions.
