Position Title:Intern - Guardrail Inspection Engineering

Position Description: The overall purpose of this position is to perform field inspections of guardrail installations in the Aberdeen and Mitchell Regions in South Dakota to ensure compliance with current design standards. Work consists of field measurement, evaluation, and documentation. These positions require significant travel and potential overnight stays. A typical work week consists of 40 hours per week with flexibility to work (4) 10-hour days with Fridays off. The position requires individuals to work as one team. Experience gained through this internship includes inspection of various types of guardrail and barriers, documentation, and risk assessment, understanding the common issues with guardrail installations, using engineering judgement, learning new software, setting up traffic control, and reviewing department policies, procedures, manuals, and standard plates. Qualifications: Applicant must be enrolled as a part-time/full-time student at a college, university, or technical institute at the time they apply. By the start of the internship, the student should have completed one year (nine months) of their chosen program.
All students are encouraged to apply, but preference may be given to applicants with a standing of junior/senior, South Dakota residents, and students of South Dakota institutions.
