*APPLICANT MUST BE A CURRENT PART-TIME OR FULL-TIME STUDENT (MINIMUM OF 6 CREDIT HOURS) IN UPCOMING SEMESTER OR IN THE IMMEDIATELY PRECEDING SEMESTER. Position Description: The epidemiology intern works with the South Dakota Department of Health's (SD-DOH) Epidemiology, Surveillance, and Informatics Center (ESIC) to maintain and enhance infectious disease surveillance and response activities. The mission of ESIC is improving the health and well-being of South Dakotans by monitoring disease, providing education, communicating timely, and collaborating with community partners to prevent disease.
The intern will perform the following duties:
- Conduct investigations of enteric diseases (campylobacteriosis, cryptosporidiosis, and giardiasis);
- Assist with outbreak response activities;
- Collaborate on an article for publication in the SD Public Health Bulletin on infectious disease trends;
- Assist with surveillance of human and mosquito West Nile virus detection;
- Create materials to support surveillance efforts for infectious disease and to increase public awareness.
Qualifications: Applicant must be enrolled as a part-time/full-time student at a college, university, or technical institute at the time they apply. By the start of the internship, the student should have completed one year (nine months) of their chosen program.
- All students are encouraged to apply, but preference may be given to applicants with a standing of junior/senior, South Dakota residents, and students of South Dakota institutions.
- Applicant should have completed two semesters of each of the following by start of internship:
- Biology or microbiology
- Chemistry
Preferred qualifications:
- Web-based applications

- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Products (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
