Position Description:This position is intended to give a broad range of experiences in a working public health laboratory. A portion of the summer will be in the area of West Nile Surveillance. This would include trapping, speciation and testing of mosquitoes using Realtime RT-PCR methods. Mosquito species and testing results are maintained in multiple databases. Additional duties would include aiding in specimen receiving, media preparation, microbiology or other sections of the medical section of the public health laboratory as needed.
Qualifications:
Ideally the applicant will have completed some type of microbiology or molecular biology coursework and completed sophomore year.
Applicant must be enrolled as a part-time/full-time student at a college, university, or technical institute at the time they apply. By the start of the internship, the student should have completed one year (nine months) of their chosen program.
All students are encouraged to apply, but preference may be given to applicants with a standing of junior/senior, South Dakota residents, and students of South Dakota institutions.
