We're looking for a Land Surveyor or Land Surveyor-In-Training whose duties include being responsible for legal land surveys for the Department of Transportation (DOT). You'll have opportunities to work both independently and in team settings, both in the office and in the field.

This position may be located in Aberdeen, Watertown, Huron, Brookings, Sioux Falls, Mitchell, or Yankton. Position location is negotiable.

Duties and Responsibilities:
This position will research historical records, determine boundaries of department properties and rights-of-way, prepare plats and corner records, corners of adjacent properties, monument property corners, and alignments for upcoming construction projects. This person will assist and may help with training area technician surveyors in various activities. This person will evaluate and recommend acquisition of survey equipment and coordinate survey equipment within various SDDOT Offices.

Significant travel is required with this position.

Work assignments are frequently performed outside in all weather conditions and around highway traffic.

Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge:
  • the laws governing the practice of land surveying and the laws governing the ownership of real property;
  • the principles, theories, and practices of highway or road engineering;
  • mathematics, especially the application of geometry and trigonometry, and physics;
  • effective practices, methods, techniques, and equipment of land surveying;
  • personnel and fiscal management.

Skills:
  • to use a computer and operate Microsoft software;
  • to use CAD software (Bentley products);
  • to use surveying software and hardware (Trimble products) used by the Department;
  • to think independently and solve problems, individually or as a team.

Abilities:
  • understand the foundational elements of mathematics that would lead to choosing one method over another for a particular task;
  • make judgements and decisions based upon a preponderance of evidence;
  • interpret statutes, and documents and defend decisions made;
  • interpret legal descriptions of land into tangible positions on the ground;
  • prepare plats and corner records;
  • plan, organize, coordinate, prioritize, assign, and evaluate the work of others;
  • maintain a variety of technical records and adapt records systems to computerization;
  • make accurate, meticulous, and precise survey computations;
  • establish and maintain effective working relationships with other land surveyors, local government officials, engineers, and the public;
  • communicate effectively;
  • see details at close range, i.e., within a few feet of the observer; and to see details at a distance.

Position Requirements:
Must be a licensed as a Land Surveyor or Land Surveyor-In-Training by the South Dakota Board of Technical Professionals.

Qualifications of the successful applicant will determine the classification level assigned. Salary will be set depending on qualifications.

Land Surveyor-In Training incumbent must obtain their Land Surveyors license within 4 years of hire date to retain employment.

Valid Driver's License.

This position is eligible for Veterans' Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
