Position: Adult Services Specialist

Status: Full-time benefitted (40 hours per week)

FLSA: Non-Exempt

Compensation: $20.66/Hour

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

The adult services specialist is responsible for planning, organizing, and coordinating adult programming, activities, and services. Responsibilities include planning and running a regular schedule of adult programs and activities that will interest and engage adults in our community. This position works with homebound, elderly, and disabled community members who are unable to come to the library. Helps these patrons find and select materials of interest and delivers the materials to them. Picks up finished materials and tracks patron’s reading lists and interests. This position also oversees the library’s large print collection, including selection, ordering, and weeding.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED:

  • Works under the immediate supervision of the Library Director.

  • May assign tasks to Library Clerks, work-study personnel, shelvers, and volunteers as needed.

SCHEDULE REQUIREMENTS

  • This full-time position works 40 hours a week, and the schedule can be either:

    • Monday through Thursday 10.30 am through 9.00 pm (four ten-hour days).

    • Monday through Thursday 12.30 pm through 9:00 pm and Friday 9.30 am to 6:00 pm (five eight-hour days).

  • Flexibility to adjust schedule when needed for circulation desk coverage, holidays, and library programs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Proactively develops, organizes, and conducts adult programming; assists with other programming as needed.

  • Implements effective outreach services program for homebound patrons, involving selection, delivery, and retrieval of loaned materials in a timely manner.

  • Maintains current reading lists of all materials loaned for outreach delivery patrons.

  • Collaborates with individuals, groups, and organizations to expand and promote library programming and services.

  • Orders large print materials for the library and suggests print and non-print materials (other than large print) to be ordered for the library.

  • Prepares interlibrary loan requests for outreach patrons as needed.

  • Respond to new outreach patron inquiries in a timely and friendly manner, including initial interview and consultation, and promote the outreach program within the community.

  • Tracks statistics for adult services and programs, compiling monthly numbers.

  • Make referrals to other agencies as needed.

  • Shares information and helps community members sign up for Accessible Library Services providing access to Braille and Talking Book materials.

  • Creates attractive and educational displays to enhance the library experience and to promote the use of library resources.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Greets visitors to the library and provides friendly, high-quality customer service to library users.

  • Performs circulation duties and procedures, including loaning and returning materials, placing reserves, checking in materials, shelving materials, checking for damaged materials, and interlibrary loan requests as needed.

  • Assists in assuring accurate library shelving by shelf-reading and reshelving of materials.

  • Assists patrons in the use of library services and facilities.

  • Responds to general information and reference questions by telephone, email, and in person.

  • Assists patrons signing up for new library cards.

  • Performs opening and closing procedures as needed.

  • Assists patrons with technology-related questions and issues and will assist patrons using physical and electronic library resources.

  • Assists with library programming as needed.

  • Performs other tasks, duties, and projects as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS – EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must possess the following:

  • Possess a valid driver's license and reliable vehicle to make deliveries to homebound patrons (fuel expenses reimbursed).

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred.

  • Experience creating educational and informational programs preferred.

  • Experience working with the homebound, elderly, and disabled preferred.

  • Library experience and/or customer service experience preferred.

  • Experience operating standard office and library equipment such as audiovisual equipment, printers, copiers, fax machines, and computers.

  • Detail-oriented and organized.

  • Ability to follow the policies and procedures of the Edith B. Siegrist Vermillion Public Library

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
