Job Summary

The Lead Maintenance Technician, with limited supervision, performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled work in the maintenance and repair of Zoo buildings, grounds, and exhibits; performs related duties as assigned.

Reports To

Facilities Manager

Essential Functions

  • Troubleshoots maintenance problems involving electrical, structural, plumbing, and equipment repair or replacement.
  • Assists in the construction, alteration, preparation, painting, and repair to structures made of wood, plaster, concrete, or brick; assists in the construction of cabinets, tables, shelves, and other types of furniture.
  • Assists in the installation, repair and maintenance of fences and building roofs.
  • Assists in the maintenance and minor repairs to heating, ventilation systems, air conditioning and refrigeration systems and equipment.
  • Assists in the troubleshooting, repair and maintenance of electrical distribution systems including electric motors, electric controls, fire alarms, and clock systems.
  • Assists in the repair and maintenance of lockable hardware such as doors, automatic electric doors, windows, lockers, and magnetic keying systems to ensure safety of facilities; maintains records on keys made and issued and lock replacements.
  • Assists in the maintenance and repair of plumbing and heating fixtures and components, piping of various size and type; checks safety equipment and replaces components such as washers, gaskets, and filters.
  • Assists in the inspection, repair, or replacement of pumps, valves, and boiler systems.
  • Assists in the writing of specifications for repairs and new construction.
  • Operate various cleaning equipment.
  • Paint walls, ceilings, woodwork, furniture, and other equipment.
  • Set up and tear down tables, chairs, and/or sound systems for conferences, zoo sponsored events, conventions, facility rentals and other activities in zoo buildings and grounds.
  • Clean, sweep, scrub, mop, wax, wash, vacuum, or polish as needed floors, windows, walls, woodwork, fixtures, rugs, furniture, surfaces, cabinets, and hardware.
  • Clean, disinfect, and deodorize rest rooms and replenish supplies.
  • Assist with special projects as needed.
  • Perform other such duties and functions as are necessary or incidental to the proper performance of this position.
  • Performs routine plumbing repairs such as unstopping toilets, sinks or urinals, fixing water leaks, leaking faucets, and water fountains.
  • Performs routine electrical repairs such as changing light bulbs or fluorescent lamps and assists in repairing ballast and light fixtures.
  • Purchases supplies, equipment, and materials necessary to complete projects.
  • Assembles and moves furniture, hangs pictures and bulletin boards, makes name plates, moves, and sets up tables and chairs.
  • Repairs and replaces doorknobs, or locks, repairs door closures, patches holes in walls.
  • Paints interior and exterior walls.
  • Maintains appropriate service and repair records.
  • Researches, purchases and inventories equipment parts, chemicals and supplies.
  • Responds to routine and emergency calls for repairs and service.
  • Assists and serves as back up to other Facilities employees.

Competency

  • Basic knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, electrical systems, and professional cleaning practices.
  • Experience with hand and power tools, as well as other types of machinery/equipment needed for maintenance and repair of public buildings.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Manual dexterity and physical stamina.
  • Must be able to follow written and oral instructions (blueprints/assembly instructions).
  • Must be proficient in the use of computers including MS Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint).

Supervisory Responsibilities

No supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment

Must be able to tolerate and be exposed to occasional loud noise levels, strong odors, toxic or caustic chemicals, dust, hay, animal fur/hair/dander, and all variable outdoor weather conditions.

Physical Demands

Must be able to climb ladders/stairs, operate various types of machinery/equipment and carry up to 70 pounds.

Travel

Infrequent local travel for various Zoo needs.

Required Education and Experience

  • Requires a high school diploma or GED certificate.
  • Must have 3 or more years of experience in a related maintenance field.

Preferred Education and Experience

Preference given to candidates with additional training, trade experience or college degree/certificate in a related field (i.e. Facilities Management, Engineering, Plumbing, Electrical, etc).

Additional Qualifications

  • Maintain a current tetanus vaccination (5 years) and be willing to be TB tested annually.
  • Must be certified or able to become certified in CPR/AED within 1 year of employment.
  • Must be able to work weekends, holidays and evenings as required.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to pass a pre-employment background check
