The South Dakota Department of Health is hiring a full time Program Specialist I for the Medical Cannabis Program.

The Medical Cannabis Registration Specialist develops, implements, and evaluates processes using the software portal and inventory tracking systems to ensure the effective operation of the Department of Health Medical Cannabis Program. Duties include providing technical assistance to department staff, other regulators, establishment managers, patients, caregivers, and healthcare practitioners. Will maintain and monitor fiscal activities associated with the medical cannabis program.

This position is a key member of the Medical Cannabis Program team. The Registration Specialist must demonstrate professionalism, initiative, and leadership. This position is responsible for certifying practitioners, processing applications for eligible cardholders within the medical cannabis patient portal and serves as the lead in providing technical assistance via phone, email, and other written correspondence to those patients and providers. This position will also assist with software vendors, help to develop, implement, and evaluate program operations within the Medical Cannabis Program.   • computer systems and applications such as Word, Excel, Outlook, Microsoft Teams, and applicable software;
  • general methods and processes in areas such as purchasing, budgeting, accounting, and other administrative activities pertinent to government operations.

Ability to:

  • interpret and follow agency policies and procedures;
  • assess program effectiveness and recommend changes or alternatives;
  • train and provide guidance to staff;
  • communicate information clearly and concisely;
  • write grant proposals, preliminary budget requests, and related reports;
  • establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the public.

  • provide input on high profile work that represents the Medical Cannabis Program with external parties;

  • answer phone calls/emails and troubleshoot potential solutions with practitioners, patients, caregivers, and establishment personnel;
  • exercise independent judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions;

  • develop self, to expand own knowledge, apply it, and share with others;
  • establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the public.
