The park maintenance technician will be based at Lake Louise Recreation Area, but will also help with lakeside use areas and fishing access areas in the area. Within these recreation areas there are electrical campsites, non-electrical campsites, comfort stations, vault toilets, boat docks, playgrounds, fishing docks, picnic shelters, and trails.
The park maintenance technician maintains park facilities, grounds, campgrounds, roads and trails, and vehicles and equipment. The technician also maintains records and reports of work accomplished to ensure the quality of the park infrastructure is sound, presentation of the park is accessible and inviting, and maximum customer service is provided.
The park maintenance technician works outdoors in all types of weather conditions. They will work near/on water and on ice, can be exposed to hazardous materials and chemicals, work with a variety of large equipment such as tractors, loaders, bobcats, etc., and an assortment of tools. The park maintenance technician will routinely lift heavy items and work on ladders and inside bucket trucks to trim trees or work on facilities. Must be able to work alone or with others, including resolving conflicts with the public.
Licenses and Certifications:
Valid driver's license and be able to obtain a SD Commercial Applicators License within 90 days of being hired.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
The ideal candidate will have an outgoing personality with a maintenance structured mindset. Experienced skills with maintenance of vehicles, landscape, and janitorial operations. A degree relating to park management, business, biology, outdoor education, or something relating is preferred but not required. The desire to learn the Department of Game, Fish, and Park's policies, rules, regulations, and be able to teach them to volunteers, staff, and the public.
Knowledge of:
- diagnostic and repair methods for a wide variety of vehicles and equipment;
- safe operating guidelines for equipment;
- chemicals for spraying weeds and farming/ harvesting practices;
- janitorial and sanitation procedures, chemicals, materials, and supplies;
- landscaping, carpentry, plumbing, painting, electrical repair.
Skill to:
- operate hand tools, power tools, and machinery;
- diagnose and repair vehicles and equipment;
- landscape sufficiently, including weed control methods and pruning.
Ability to:
- communicate effectively with a diverse group of staff;
- visualize park enhancements;
- use a computer and various software including word, excel, access, social media, etc.
- provide on-the-job training to assigned employees;
- understand and follow instructions and compose required reports.
