Park Manager provides administrative assistance to the District 17 Park Supervisor. The Park Manager functions as team leader over buildings and ground technicians, seasonal front-line workers, seasonal maintenance staff, campground attendants and park volunteers. Duties include coordinating campground reservations, Point of Sale (POS) system training and issues, auditing, etc. to carry out the business of the parks. The parks include Angostura Recreation Area, Shep's canyon Recreation Area, Shep's LUA, Bailey's LUA, Hwy 71 bridge canoe access. Taking care of customer needs including selling park entrance licenses, directions to sites, and information about the Recreation Area. Conflict resolution with park visitors, volunteers, and/or seasonal staff. Maintaining park facilities, equipment, and grounds in cooperation with the other permanent staff. Performs structural repairs and enhancements, preventative maintenance on equipment, landscaping, pruning and trimming trees in cooperation with other permanent staff. Preforms safety inspections of buildings, marina and grounds. Also helps with various projects in any of the District 17 managed areas, and other districts when help is needed. The Park Manager will also help to coordinate the special events held annually at Angostura Recreation Area.
At times this job will be physical, and work in all weather conditions.
Licenses and Certifications: Valid drivers license, Pesticide Applicators licenses within the first 6 months of hire.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have: Foresight to district wide administrative planning, organizational and communication skills to set efficient and effective operational standards, knowledge of management practices to enhance and improve the natural resources, ability to monitor compliance with applicable rules and regulations, belief in servitude to maximize public service and experience, and posses knowledge and skills to supervise subordinate staff to ensure goals and objectives of the work unit are met.
A Bachelors Degree in park management or related field is preferred.
Responsibilities:
Knowledge of:
- the principles and practices of park management;
- federal and state laws and regulations pertaining to wildlife habitat resources;
- interpretive programming;
- natural, cultural, and environmental resources and related management practices;
- South Dakota history and geography; architectural history, and historic preservation;
- landscaping design and implementation;
- basic carpentry, plumbing and electrical skills sufficient to perform required building maintenance and repair;
- boating and snowmobiling laws;
- volunteer programs and volunteering;
- firefighting safety practices and techniques;
- cleaning methods and chemicals.
Ability to:
- communicate effectively with park users, other staff, division managers, landowners and the general public;
- visualize park enhancements and estimate costs of development and benefits;
- prepare and justify annual operating plans and budgets;
- enforce park rules and regulations;
- answer questions pertaining to wildlife, hunting, fishing, and related topics;
- operate, repair and maintain a variety of equipment and tools;
- perform administrative tasks such as keeping accurate records, collecting money auditing others' records, writing local contracts for services and buying supplies;
- use a computer and various software and teach others how to use them;
- provide work direction to permanent and seasonal employees, volunteers and trusties.
