This position provides routine and emergency medical care, on-call assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of inmates in one or more prison clinical settings.

Responsibilities will include, but not limited to:
- Conducting medical/physical examinations;
- Ordering and interpreting appropriate diagnostic tests and diagnosing medical conditions;
- Prescribing medications and treatment;
- Educating patients about preventive health care;
- Ensuring minor medical procedures are performed on-site;
- Accountable for the work product of Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants. Accountability involves direct line authority, clinical supervision, consultation, education and other professional development activities relative to their performance. The position ensures that mid-level provider on-call practices are responsive to medical;
- Providing medical services to a daily patient caseload including chronic care, sick call, emergencies and routine physicals;
- Position participates in the monthly "on-call" schedule and may provide on-site assistance to other DOC clinical units and facilities when demonstrated staffing needs arise;
- Providing instruction, demonstration and training to other health care professionals;
- Providing medical advice to other organizational units or health care specialties through consultation regarding patients or protocols;
- Providing advice to management for the development of medical programs, treatment standards and clinical pathways;
- Position ensures that computer data entry, referrals and consultations, medical reporting, medical co-signature and offender grievance requirements are completed in accordance with DOC policies, procedures, clinical standards, South Dakota statute and medical directives;
- Maintaining problems' lists and M-Code ratings in offender's health records, identifying, applying and updating housing and work restrictions and obtaining authorization numbers for consultations, diagnostic procedures and surgeries;
- This position may be required to participate in restraining an inmate primarily for medical reasons;
- Position responsible for attending quarterly medical review meetings, monthly physician round table meetings and other division meetings.
Licenses and Certification: - Applicant must be licensed to practice medicine in the State of South Dakota as a Medical Doctor or Doctor of Osteopathy;
- Applicant must be board eligible (completed residency) or board certified (passed all requirements or exams), by the appropriate board recognized by the American Medical Association, in one of the following specialty areas:
- Emergency Medicine
- Family Medicine
- Internal Medicine
- Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
- Preventive Medicine
Required Competencies:
- Ability to provide direct patient care to offenders;
- Knowledgeable in full-spectrum primary care;
- Skilled in office based procedures;
- Ability to maintain professionalism in a complex environment;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders;
- Ability to read and comprehend the English language;
- Ability to effectively communicate fluently in English both verbally and in writing
- Ability to create accessible documents and technical content that follows plain language guidelines with accessibility in mind.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience providing medical care in a correctional environment;
- Experience in Family Medicine or Internal Medicine;
- Experience managing chronic medical conditions as a Physician.

The SD DOC is committed to a work environment free from illegal drugs and alcohol. All job offers are contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation, urine drug screen (UDS) and the candidate's ability to perform the essential functions of the position.
Individuals selected for the position will have the opportunity to carry Oleoresin Capsicum (OC/pepper spray) if desired. If OC spray is carried, the staff carrying OC spay will be required to have direct (level 1) exposure during the training program. Individuals selected for the position must successfully complete a written and practical self-defense exam and successfully complete CPR to AHA guidelines - this includes successful completion of the practical/hands on portion as well as the written exam. Selected individuals must possess the physical ability to successfully complete the practical self-defense exam, which involves the following:
- Lift arms above head and kick as high as own waist;
- Stabilize another person to accomplish a controlled take down;
- Use arms, palms of hands, shins, and feet to deliver blows;
- Withstand impact (slow speed or with a safety bag) on own body from strikes/blows;
- Rotate body 90 degrees with feet planted for striking with foot or using a defensive tactic;
- Get down on one or both knees and up again with multiple repetitions.
Additionally, TB (tuberculosis) screening is required of all new employees upon hire.
