Region Materials Technician!

Location is negotiable within the Aberdeen Region.
The Region Materials Technician conducts Independent Assurance (IA) testing for a Region within Department of Transportation.
This position enjoys a typical 40-hour workweek, Monday through Friday; although, hours may vary during construction activity including weekends. Occasional overtime is required.
The successful applicant will use arms, legs, and back to safely move, drag, and lift 40 pounds frequently, up to 60 pounds occasionally (without assistance), and 90 or more pounds infrequently (with assistance); sit and stand for extended periods of time; routinely reach, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, or crouch; walk long distances over many kinds of terrain and outdoor elements; and accurately perform liquid limit tests. Applicants must be able to hear audible warning signals.
Occasional in-state travel with overnights stays may be required.

Duties and Responsibilities:- Conducts and reviews Independent Assurance (IA) tests in a region - Coordinates region materials laboratory activities to ensure that materials, procedures, products, and equipment are compliant with specifications for Portland Cement Concrete, Asphalt Concrete, Aggregate Gradation, In-Place Density, Soils.
- a. Observes area personnel collecting and processing acceptance tests at construction sites, collects IA samples and processes them in the region laboratory, and compares test results for compliance with testing procedures and rates of acceptance.
- b. Teaches correct collection and testing methods on the job and inspects field laboratories for compliance with proper specifications
- Project Reviews - Examines project documentation for completeness and accuracy, checks for certifications, facilitates acquisition of missing test reports and certifications, and prepares reports of findings.
- Equipment & Supplies - Orders, maintains inventory, issues, calibrates, maintains, and repairs testing and sampling equipment and supplies and issues equipment/supplies to Department of Transportation Areas within the Region to efficiently and effectively accomplish the work.
- Laboratory Materials Testing Equipment/Record Inspections - Inspects contractor's materials testing equipment/records to ensure appropriate calibrations records match laboratory equipment per Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) regulations on Quality Control/Quality Assurance asphalt pavement projects.
- Soils, Aggregate, and Specified Mixture Analysis - Analyzes soils and aggregate and other specified mixtures to determine classification per Department of Transportation Materials Manual.
- Performs/Witnesses Core Sampling - Performs and/or witnesses core sampling on pavements and structures to obtain accurate strength/depth information and to ensure contractors utilize the proper procedures for obtaining cores.
- Borrow activities - Locates sources of borrow and aggregate for construction projects. Meets with landowners to verify permission to drill. Determines locations of test holes to be drilled. Operates drilling equipment and vehicles. Collects core samples and keeps notes on test sites. Calls for locations of underground utilities.
- Precast Concrete Plant Inspections - Inspects precast concrete products and pre-stressed reinforced concrete products to ensure they are produced in accordance with Standard Specifications, Materials Manual and shop drawings.
- Annual Concrete Supplier Inspections - Inspects mixer unit and commercial plants annually to ensure conformance with plans and specifications.
- Monitors, Maintains, and Tests Concrete Cylinders - Monitors, maintains, tests and processes concrete cylinders to determine strength of concrete.
- Contractor Equipment Certification - Certifies contractor water truck tank capacity and pile driving equipment weights for use by Department of Transportation Area office personnel on construction projects.
- Training, Development, & Work Direction -Attends training andprovides training and work direction to Department of Transportation Region/Area personnel ensuring staff are aware of and following standard rules, policies and procedures regarding material testing and sampling.
- Safety - Maintains and promotes a safe work environment and participates in public safety awareness activities.
- Other duties as assigned.
Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Knowledge of:
- Civil Engineering techniques (preferred but not required);
- Department of Transportation materials testing procedures (preferred but not required).
Skills:

Position Requirements:
Certification in one or more materials testing areas and/or one or more inspection areas is required within the first year of employment. Further certification areas will be determined by the supervisor according to job responsibility and needs. Required certifications must be maintained for continued employment. Classes and training in the certification areas are provided through the Department of Transportation.
A valid driver's license is required.
Compensation:
The total compensation of Hourly Wage + State/Federal Benefits for a typical year for entry level Region Operations Technician is approximately $69,602.00 annually.
This position is eligible for Veterans' Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
