Job Summary: This opening is for a full-time Registered Dietitian/Licensed Nutritionist (RD/LN) with the SD Department of Health, Division of Family and Community Health, Office of Family Nutrition Services (OFNS). The RD/LN works in collaboration with a healthcare team under the supervision of a Dietician Manager assigned to the west region. The position provides services for the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Supplemental Food Program which promotes nutrition and healthy lifestyle choices and leads participants to develop a client-centered plan to meet identified needs. The primary functions of this position are to provide case management of high-risk participants for the delivery of WIC services. In addition, approve special formula requests, consult with prescribing healthcare providers as needed, and provide quality assurance activities to include documentation review for nutritional high-risk participants
This is a position assigned to provide services to clients in the west part of the state. Travel for meetings and on-site visits to maintain caseloads will be required.
Additional functions of the position include, but are not limited to:
- determination of eligibility including identity, income, residency, categorical and nutritional risk;
- counsel high-risk participants;
- nutrition and health assessments;
- nutrition and health education;
- breastfeeding education and support;
- linking clients to health and social resources;
- provides nutrition related technical assistance to team members;
- provides nutrition education in community settings;
- works collaboratively to develop nutrition, outreach, and breastfeeding goals for the population served;
- provides additional Maternal Child Health services such as developmental screening and infant safe sleep education, and promotes immunizations, oral health, and other public health services;
- collaborates with community partners and providers to build effective working relationships, enhance referral pathways, and explore opportunities to partner in new and innovative ways.
Licenses and Certifications: Possession of a Registered Dietitian or Licensed Nutritionist in the State of South Dakota in accordance with a South Dakota law, within one year of employment.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:Completed one of these two requirements:
(1) Dietetics; has received a baccalaureate or postgraduate degree from an accredited college or university with a major course of study in human nutrition, nutrition education, food and nutrition, dietetics, or food service management; and (a) Has completed a documented, supervised pre-professional practice experience component in dietetic practice of not less than nine hundred hours under the supervision of a registered dietitian, nutrition or dietetic professional licensed by a state, or a person with a doctoral degree conferred by an accredited college or university with a major course of study in human nutrition, nutrition education, food and nutrition, dietetics, or food systems management. (b) Has successfully completed or is eligible to sit for the registration examination for dietitians administered by the commission.

(2) Nutrition; (a) Has received a master's or doctoral degree from an accredited college or university with a major course of study in human nutrition, public health nutrition, clinical nutrition, nutrition education, community nutrition, or foods and nutrition; and (b) Has successfully completed a comprehensive nutrition competence examination administered by the commission.
Knowledge of:
- fundamental theories, concepts, methods and basic sciences involved in nutrition and public health;
- effective communication skills, active listening and skilled motivational interviewing;
- providing services to clients in a public health setting;
- motivational interviewing and client-centered counseling techniques; wellness coaching;
- principles and practices of food and nutrition sciences;
- infant safe sleep recommendations;
- breastfeeding education;
- infant/child developmental milestones .
Ability to:
- explain complex nutrition information at client level of understanding;
- exercise independent judgement in attaining program goals and activities while adhering to prescribed policies, procedures and protocols;
- establish and maintain good relationships with program staff, health care providers, the community and public health teams in multiple settings;
- organize, be flexible and prioritize complex situations;
- establish and maintain rapport with clients;
- motivate participants to make decisions/goals to improve their nutritional status;
- provide nutrition and health information effectively via one-to-one and group settings; virtual settings (zoom, teams, telemedicine); phone and text; and/or online;
- share education at the client's level of understanding;
- prioritize and facilitate referrals within the context of multiple and complicated participant needs;
- apply federal and state regulations; policies and procedures in the functions of the position;
- work both autonomously and in a team environment;
- communicate effectively;
- demonstrate cultural competency when working with socioeconomically and culturally diverse populations;
- recognize and facilitate opportunities for outreach, marketing, and partnership building;
- communicate effectively with interpreters either in-person, by phone, or during virtual service delivery;
- multitask, prioritize complex situations and adapt to quickly shifting priorities.
