Join Our Team as a Seasonal Roller Operator with Our Paving Crew!
Western Construction in Rapid City, SD is seeking a Seasonal Roller Operator to join our paving crew. If you have experience operating rollers and are looking for an exciting opportunity to work on challenging projects, then we want to hear from you! Or if you are new to the industry and are looking for something new, we are willing to train for this position!
The typical work season is April - December.
Responsibilities:
- Ensure a safe work environment in compliance with all safety policies and procedures using appropriate tools and equipment for the task with awareness of one’s surroundings.
- Safely operates roller to compress/compact dirt, aggregate, or asphalt to achieve the specified grading and smooth surface.
- Operate equipment with production goals and targets in mind to maintain project budget and schedule.
- Determine the speed, pattern, and direction of the roller based on knowledge of compressible material to achieve a smooth grade and/or surface.
- Observe the temperature of the material and operate the roller at optimum temperature.
- Effectively communicate with crew members using radios and hand signals to coordinate work and ensure safety.
- Perform daily inspection and maintenance and ensure the roller is in safe, proper working order, including fluid checks and lubrication. Complete daily walkaround noting necessary maintenance and notifying supervisor if there are issues.
- Visual safety inspection for leaks and damage to the machine before operation.
- Follow proper lock-out/tag-out procedures.

Qualifications:
- Pass pre-employment drug/alcohol screening and physical.
- At least 18 years of age, due to the nature of the position
- Previous road construction and asphalt paving experience is a plus, but not required.
- Ability to operate equipment holding a straight line.
- Strong work ethic and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to lift heavy objects and work in all weather conditions.
- Attention to detail and commitment to safety and job site housekeeping.
- Ability to read, write, and communicate verbally.
- Positive, professional attitude with a willingness to travel.
- Ability to work overtime as required, including some weekends.
Physical Requirements
- Able to physically lift heavy materials (up to 50 pounds) frequently throughout the work shift with or without assistance.
- Frequent walking, sitting, bending, stooping, squatting, crawling, climbing, kneeling, balancing, pushing, pulling, reaching overhead, repetitive use of arms, hands, and fingers.
- Standing/working on feet for extended periods and walking across uneven terrain, climbing up and down ladders and stairways
- Able to work in extreme weather conditions and elements, including but not limited to heat, cold, rain, mud, dust, etc.
- Frequent exposure to noise, dust, fuel, oil, or other chemicals.
- Able to wear personal protective equipment and any other safety-related equipment.
- Able to work a minimum of 8 hours a day and overtime as required.
