GENERAL SUMMARY

The successful candidate in this role will be responsible for managing university servers and server applications, which includes overseeing server operating systems, maintaining applications used for creating and modifying user network accounts, and ensuring file synchronization between servers, mobile devices, and the university's backup systems. Additionally, this individual will maintain and enforce security protocols for campus servers, email systems, and user accounts. They will also assist the Network Administrator with firewall and network system security. Collaboration with the Network Administrator and other IT staff, particularly those handling campus hardware, is essential, including cross-training opportunities under the guidance of the Vice President for Information Technology/CIO or their designee.

MAJOR FUNCTIONS

  • Install, configure, and maintain physical, hybrid, virtual, and cloud servers and storage (Microsoft, Linux/Unix, VMware, Entra and other Cloud solutions) to ensure optimal performance and uptime.
    1. Monitor server performance and identify/troubleshoot issues.
    2. Prepare, schedule, communicate, and execute upgrades and system patches.
    3. Plan and forecast for future needs and capacity planning.
  • Create backup and recovery processes for on-prem and cloud-based data and perform regular backups and tests of backups to ensure data integrity.
  • Manage user network accounts for campus personnel and students in accordance with the established University of Sioux Falls policies and procedures.  This may include creating, maintaining, and deleting accounts using PowerShell, the campus Student Information System, and other user account applications.
  • Implement and manage server and email security measures and best practices.
  • Participate in incident response and resolution efforts, providing timely support to end-users.
  • In coordination with other IT personnel, conduct regular security audits and vulnerability assessments, implementing best practices to safeguard university infrastructure, document system configurations, procedures, and policies to maintain operational consistency and knowledge sharing and complete the migration of campus email and files to cloud-based systems.
  • Assist with designing and managing central business applications including, but not limited to, university email systems, HelpDesk applications, and printer management.
  • Assist with other day-to-day tasks in the Information Technology office, including campus PCs and personal devices, network, telephones, and audio/visual technology used by students and personnel to access campus resources.
  • Availability to assist end-users with training on the use of specific applications or systems as needed.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Complies with all USF policies and regulations, as well as those of outside agencies and vendors, including but not limited to Title IX, NCAA, NSIC, the Department of Education, the Clery Act, FERPA, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the Department of Labor, and the Department of Justice.
  • Other job-appropriate duties as assigned   

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Information Technology, or equivalent preferred; Minimum of an Associate’s degree required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of server management preferred.
  • Certification in Microsoft servers (MCSA, MCSE), CompTIA, and VMware preferred.
  • Proven expertise with Microsoft Windows server operating systems, including Active Directory, group policies, roaming profiles and interfacing Active Directory to external systems.
  • Experience with Linux and/or UNIX operating systems, as well as open-source tools, Microsoft Office 365, Entra, PowerShell, and Visual Basic scripting.
  • Ability to set priorities and manage changing priorities effectively.
  • Proven expertise in current technology and industry best practices.
  • Demonstrated effective written and oral communication with ability to create clear documentation for projects and procedures.
  • Effective communication skills, which enable open communication with both technical and non-technical stakeholders within and outside the IT environment.
  • Demonstrates a strong work ethic that contributes to a cohesive team effort and departmental success.
  • Occasional work on nights and weekends may be necessary.
  • Ability to regularly lift and /or move up to 30 pounds; successfully pass required background check; with valid driver’s license and ability to regularly stand at workbench or with rack-mounted equipment, sit in a typical office environment; walk from office to office around campus as necessary for job; lift and use ladder, pull cable or install cable occasionally as needed during the course of the job.
