The South Dakota Department of Revenue is hiring a Telephone Service Representative to join their Pierre, SD Division of Motor Vehiclesteam. This is a full-time customer service-focused role that will handle inquiries from a diverse range of individuals by phone, e-mail, and Live Chat. Role summary: The Telephone Service Representative provides guidance to the public, dealers, and county staff on how laws and procedures apply to their specific situations, including vehicle ownership and registration compliance processes. This opportunity requires investigative skills, independent judgment, and making decisions based on reason. This onsite role works a Monday - Friday schedule, 8am - 5pm.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
  • Customer service experience;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-volume call/customer support center;
  • Problem solving skills.


Knowledge of:
  • Motor vehicle, title and registration preferred but not required
  • Business English including grammar, spelling, and punctuation;
  • Computer software applications.


Skill to:

  • Concisely provide information, explanations, and instructions;
  • Communication information on laws, policies, and procedures via telephone, e-mail, and Live Chat;
  • Read and interpret information, laws, and rules;
  • Basic computer skills and excellent typing abilities
  • Organize work, set priorities, and follow-up with minimal direction;
  • Demonstrate respect, courtesy, and tact when interacting with others.


Ability to:

  • Obtain and provide information by phone in a clear and courteous manner;
  • Maintain composure, efficiency, and a positive customer service attitude during busy periods with frequent interruptions;
  • Exercise delegated authority to act and to recognize when it is appropriate to seek assistance;
  • Independently recognize and define a problem, identify the resources available to help solve the problem, create and implement viable solutions and follow through to ensure the problem is resolved to the satisfaction of all parties;
  • Multi-task and manage multiple duties and projects;
  • Ability to work with all types of people and personalities.
